Air–Water Properties in Rectangular Free-Falling Jets

چکیده
This study analyzes the air–water flow properties in overflow nappe jets. Data were measured several cross-sections of rectangular free-falling jets downstream a sharp-crested weir, with maximum fall distance 2.0 m. The obtained using conductivity phase-detection probe. Furthermore, back-flushing Pitot-Prandtl probe was used order to obtain velocity profiles. Five specific flows rates analyzed, from 0.024 0.096 m3/s/m. measurements allowed us characterize increment air entrainment during fall, affecting characteristic distributions, reducing non-aerated water inner core, and increasing lateral spread, thereby leading changes jet thickness. results showed slight differences between upper lower trajectories. experimental data thickness related local void fraction 50% seemed be similar due only gravitational effects until break-up length reached. amount energy tended remain constant falling over 15 times greater than total head weir crest, at which entrained affected entire cross-section, core disappear. new experiments allow improve current knowledge turbulent

متن کاملFalling jets of particles in viscous fluids
We have investigated the time evolution of a jet of non-Brownian particles falling under the action of gravity in a viscous liquid at low Reynolds number. Different regimes have been observed depending on volume fraction and particle-to-jet diameter ratio. In particular, the jet has been found to be unstable and to develop varicose modulation of its diameter at low volume fractions. The dominan...
متن کاملDelayed capillary breakup of falling viscous jets.
Thin jets of viscous fluid like honey falling from capillary nozzles can attain lengths exceeding 10 m before breaking up into droplets via the Rayleigh-Plateau (surface tension) instability. Using a combination of laboratory experiments and WKB analysis of the growth of shape perturbations on a jet being stretched by gravity, we determine how the jet's intact length l(b) depends on the flow ra...

Submitted for the DFD12 Meeting of The American Physical Society Mechanism of axis-switching in low aspect-ratio rectangular jets NAN CHEN, HUIDAN (WHITNEY) YU, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) — Axis-switching (AS) refers to the change in the orientation of the major axis of the jet from initial spanwise to later lateral direction. This phenomenon is of great interest ...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Free Surface in the Case of Plane Turbulent Wall Jets in Shallow Tailwater
Wall-jet flow is an important flow field in hydraulic engineering, and its applications include flow from the bottom outlet of dams and sluice gates. In this paper, the plane turbulent wall jet in shallow tailwater is simulated by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard turbulence closure model. This study aims to explore the ability of a time splitting method ...
